We've been busy fishing and upgrading our little boat in this new cozy little fishing/survival horror
game... Sorry, what? Cozy, fishing, survival and horror all in the same sentence...I know, super weird, right?
That's exactly what I thought until I set sail and started catching my first fish, only I was the one that got 'hooked', and I honestly can't put this game down.
The game introduces you to the simple yet intricate mechanics of fishing well and keeps things basic enough that you can start fishing right away. However, as you progress through the game, the rare fish, creatures or items you can catch become increasingly challenging and require some level of skill to real them in. Dredge has plenty for everyone to do, from basic fishing to exploring faraway islands to see who or what you may find.
There are different biomes around the ocean, and you can only catch certain types of fish depending on the biome, water depth and several other factors. So if you love collecting things and marking off a list, you will be set trying to catch not only the 150+ species within the depths of the waters, but each species can also have several special/rare versions to catch.
Upgrading your boat requires finding or dredging certain places in the ocean to obtain unique materials that become further away or harder to find. Still, you will definitely need a few upgrades if you want to venture further from your hometown.
The horror side comes into the game early on if you stay out past daylight. As soon as dusk falls, your visibility is limited, and you can see far less as the hours wander into the night. You will quickly become paranoid, and what lies beneath the water's surface can quickly end your little adventure, sending you back to your last saved game.
Overall the game allows you to pick it up and start having fun quickly but has many layered systems in place for progression, RPG-like stats, exploration, discovery and much much more. I've put around 20 hours into Dredge so far and can see myself quickly putting over 100 hours in to complete the main story and some side quests, so there is plenty of stuff to do and endless hours of fun for the completionist that likes to collect everything.
