Renowned horror artist Masahiro Ito has brought his haunting expertise to Magic: The Gathering's upcoming set, Duskmourn. Ito, best known for his work on the iconic Silent Hill video game series, has designed the menacing lead villain of Duskmourn, The Devouring Father Valgavoth.
In an exclusive interview with Wizards of the Coast, Ito discussed his approach to character design, his greatest fears, and his hopes for his involvement in the Magic universe.
Ito revealed that he was inspired by both Western and Japanese horror aesthetics when designing Valgavoth. He aimed to create a character that was both familiar and unsettling, with a unique blend of styles. The result is a terrifying figure that is sure to leave a lasting impression on players.
When asked about his thoughts on the world of Duskmourn, Ito expressed his admiration for the set's retro horror influences. He noted that the haunted house setting and emphasis on character development were reminiscent of classic horror films and games.
While Ito admitted that he is not a fan of supernatural phenomena, his work in horror has clearly had a profound impact on him. He shared that his greatest fear is running out of money, a surprisingly relatable concern for someone who creates such terrifying monsters.
Ito concluded the interview by expressing his hope that fans will enjoy his work on Valgavoth and that he may have the opportunity to design more original characters for Magic: The Gathering in the future.
